 The Boston Herald reported "CEO Roundtable Jazzes Up Its Annual Retreat" (3/15/07, p. 28). The article by reporter Donna Goodison gave the background on the choice of topic for the CEOs, "Jazz for CEOs: the Discipline of Improvisation." The story explained why jazz is a good metaphor for business leadership today, quoting me, "A business operates much more like a jazz band, where individuals are called upon to improvise while they are playing. The tune doesn't change but the approach changes as you respond to conditions... You want to create an expectation that improvisation will occur on a normal basis within your organization, and that takes work."
Eli Newberger, world-famous pediatrician and co-founder of the New Black Eagle Jazz Band, and Tina Packer, founder and artistic director of Shakespeare & Company, led the discussions and had world-class support from Bob Winter on piano and Ted Casher on reeds. Eli was quoted as saying, "They're (the CEOs) going to be full of jazz to incorporate improvisation as a new tool in their repertory." The story included photos. |
